AC Milan have confirmed the sale of Sandro Tonali to Newcastle United for a club-record fee of €70 million (£60 million/$76 million).
The 23-year-old Italian midfielder has agreed a six-year contract with the Premier League club, and will become their marquee signing of the summer.
Tonali joined Milan from Brescia in 2021, and quickly established himself as a key player in the Rossoneri’s midfield. He helped the club win the Serie A title in 2021/22, and was named in the Serie A Team of the Season.
However, Tonali’s time at Milan was not without its challenges. He was criticized for his inconsistent form at times, and there were reports that he was unhappy with the club’s management.
Newcastle’s interest in Tonali was first reported in March, and the Magpies have been determined to sign him ever since. They have offered him a significant wage increase, and the opportunity to play in the Premier League.
Tonali is the latest in a long line of high-profile signings for Newcastle, who are now one of the richest clubs in the world. The Magpies have also signed Sven Botman, Matt Targett, and Nick Pope this summer, and are expected to make further signings before the start of the season.
Tonali’s departure is a blow to Milan, who have lost one of their most promising young players. However, the club will receive a significant financial windfall, and they will be able to reinvest that money in other areas of the squad.
It remains to be seen how Tonali will adapt to life in the Premier League. However, he is a talented player with a lot of potential, and he could be a major asset for Newcastle in the years to come.
